Mission

Why is This Important?

Hands Land focuses on creating educational resources for young children through ASL rhymes and rhythms. Rhymes and rhythms have many hidden purposes and benefits when it comes to language acquisition. Hands Land’s songs are intentionally made to be linguistically-dense, structure-based, and packed with phonological patterns. Those features promote young children's phonological awareness skills, contribute to vocabulary growth, and galvanize prediction and memory retention skills. Phonological awareness means the child is able to identify, think about, and manipulate the smallest parts in words. Once children acquire phonological awareness skills, they are capable of thinking about language and figuring out what makes sense and doesn't make sense. Research has shown a strong correlation between ASL phonological skills and overall language skills. Moreover, an early foundation in ASL will help with the acquisition of English. Simply by singing songs, young children are actually acquiring important language skills without realizing it. Hands Land aims to make these valuable educational resources accessible to millions of young signers through school tours, workshops, and curriculum development.
